CLASSICAL INDIAN DANCE & YOGA – During Autumn we are releasing and letting go of the old, adapting to change, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually preparing for winter, and being asked to accept the impermanence of life. This is the season that symbolizes a time of self-reflection, inner-refinement, and balance between light an darkness, the divine masculine and feminine energies within and outside the self – so that more enjoyment, peace and equanimity is accessible from moment to moment, and throughout our sometimes challenging Saskatchewan winters!

Join me this Fall for a Yoga of Classical Indian Dance Session I am titling “The Yogini’s Mirror” ~ dedicated to the Goddess archetype for nurturing the Feminine principle in all her many aspects and forms, so as to experience greater balance and harmony with the Masculine principle whilst cultivating unconditional self-love and compassion, confidence and a multi-dimensional capacity for expressing and channelling all physical, mental, emotional and sensual aspects of the limited self toward the Divine, the unlimited Self and God.

Body is a temple. The Creator resides within.

Yoga and classical dance traditions of India have been entwined for millennia. The exacting hand gestures, postures, and movements of Indian classical dance can only be achieved though yogic concentration. Conversely the aesthetics, symmetry, and dynamism of dance enhances the practice of yoga. These two traditions, so complementary and essential to one another, are united here for the purpose and intention of this yoga-dance offering.

In this approach to yoga and dance, expressed through the body and through a yoga of emotions, we see the traditions embodied in a manner that embraces the totality of the human experience. The result is the dance of the yogini, the sacred feminine initiates who dance with one foot in nature and the other in the realm of the Divine.

This Fall, and for the very first time, I feel so inspired and ready to offer innovative yoga routines and dance practices that unite classical Indian dance with yoga. My own personal study, life experiences and spiritual practices – constantly aimed toward embodying the yogini devotional dancer within myself – have led me here and NOW!

After reading the book “A Yoga of Indian Classical Dance” by Roxanne Kamayani Gupta (Ph.D); Indian classical dancer of the Kuchipudi dance tradition, scholar of Indian culture and teacher of hatha and kriya yoga… I could see and really feel a mirror reflection through her story and journey as a classical artist and traveler / seeker. Through her book I saw a path that could and would lead me towards fusing my own passion for yoga and dance together. Roxanne, well she gave me a sort of permission – or rather confirmation to go for it with all my heart! …and so it is, I am offering this yoga and Odissi dance ‘fusion’ program for anyone who finds themselves here, reading this blog…

Distilling my extensive yoga training, (western) dance background, and Indian classical dance experience into techniques for yogic study is certain to assist Odissi dance students in achieving a dynamic, beautiful, and graceful practice. Amazing JOY and the satisfaction of hard work and discipline is guaranteed.
